FOREWORD:
“FOR many years there has been a need for a basic book on dog care for the average pet owner—one which would acquaint the reader with the facts of canine life and health, with what may go wrong and how to take the first steps in doing something about it, and with the proper care and feeding of the normal, healthy puppy or dog. “Care of the Dog” fills that need. It is both a primer and a manual of care and feeding, approached from the viewpoint of a reader who may know nothing at all of dogs when he first picks up the book.
While other books have been written on the subject, many of these have overlooked the basics needed by the average owner, and have placed considerable emphasis upon specific treatments for certain conditions, giving drug doses and methods of administration, and other technical procedures never intended for the pet owner. Such literature, in amateur hands, usually does more harm than good. Not only are disease conditions falsely diagnosed and thus improperly treated, but the time lost before professional aid is finally sought may well spell the difference between the life and death of a beloved pet.
Such is not the case in this refreshing new book presented by Charles Leedham. The author has followed the dog from birth to old age, and carefully covered the relevant points of care and health vital to the pet owner, but there has been no attempt to provide, between the covers of a book intended for the layman, a substitute for the veterinarian.
The important commonly occurring disease states are discussed simply, yet comprehensively, in a most orderly and helpful fashion—informing the dog owner of the nature and symptoms of the various diseases, conditions and injuries so that early recognition can be made and veterinary aid promptly secured when needed. In cases of injury or poisoning, first aid measures have been carefully outlined. General care and preventive medicine are fully and accurately covered through the book, as well as simple home treatments for minor situations not requiring the services of a veterinarian.
The necessity of getting the new puppy off to a proper start, with adequate diet, preventive vaccinations and worming, is laid out in clear terms. One entire section is devoted to the puppy’s psychological development, based on recent research in animal behavior. This section alone would make the book worthwhile, as it points out the importance of owner-pet relationships during certain critical periods of the puppy’s mental growth which will have a profound effect on the animal’s ability to relate properly with people in later life.
The reader will find this book filled with useful information presented in an interesting and highly readable style. It presents the knowledge every dog owner should have, and is a book which can be freely recommended by veterinarians to their clients in the interest of better dog care.”
