PREFACE:
“THE underlying purpose of this book is to present a simple, work¬able concept of the body’s physico-mechanical adaptation to various environmental stresses with its resultant physical manifestations. The plane of explanation is maintained at a level adaptable to the under¬standing of nurses, therapists, personnel directors, executives and others in the non-medical laity. Actually, the book is like a schizophrenic—it has two personalities. The dual functions are necessary because concepts of industrial medicine and basic sciences are important material for the second part of the book which is the practical guide.
The authors sustain a sincere belief that a registered nurse can effectively and safely alleviate much of the discomfortures of the skeleto-musculo-ligamentous system which results from reactions to life’s stresses. This book is edited to serve as a written corollary to oral instructions; the latter would necessitate only about six hours of supervised training and practice for nurses, physical therapists and exercise therapists.
Thus, industries and institutions regardless of size, can provide effective treatment with minimal outlay of cash for personnel or equipment, for such curses as low back pain, stiff neck, tension headache, tenosynovitis, menstrual cramps, “stone bruise” and primary muscle spasm.
Certainly the concept is no panacea; it is not secretive, magic, or revolutionary; it has sound anatomical and physiological basis; it will not cure all cases; it will totally fail in a few. However, it will remain a valuable medical adjunct, and on its own merit will perform a distinct service in both the preventive and therapeutic aspects of general medicines’ armamentarium.
The authors are deeply cognizant of the invaluable contributions of hosts of predecessors in the medical research field. Particularly important are such outstanding orthopedists as Dr. Baer of John Hopkins, Dr. Roberts of New York Hospital for Ruptured and Crippled, Dr. Obqr of Harvard and the Drs. Mennell, father and son, of St. Thomas of London and Virginia, respectively. The greatest plaudits, however, are directed to Dr. Harvey E. Billig of Los Angeles who made order of the maelstrom of isolated and seemingly unrelated facts and findings from the fields of medicine, engineering, physiology, anatomy and pathology.
Likewise, acknowledgments of appreciation are in order: to a fine industrial concern whose plant managers and personnel directors have foresight in underwriting this program; to Eugene Fleming and Dan Golliday for the excellent illustrations herein incorporated; to Jack Folmer for skillful photographic sequences; to Ilah Heraty for the expert typing and stenographic work, beyond the call of duty and to Charles C Thomas, Publisher, for suggestions and corrections—we give our heartfelt thanks.”
