Author’s Foreword:

The purposes of this short book are two. Firstly, to provide the dog owner with a guide for use in times of emergency. Secondly, how to care for and nurse the animal in a variety of conditions.

It is emphasised that first-aid measures are not the whole treatment for the conditions listed. It is hoped that by providing the dog owner with some knowledge of the correct action to take in emergencies, and in after-care, he will be able to give his animal practical help. Attention by a veterinary surgeon is essential in many of the conditions mentioned, and no attempt is made to discuss the specialised approach of the expert.

In the past, “first-aid” has often done more harm than good, and aggravated rather than alleviated. Canine nursing and day-to-day care is essential for full and rapid recovery, a fact sometimes sadly neglected.

This guide has been made as comprehensive as possible, but its limitations are realised. It will not, of course, cover every emergency. In cases of doubt, where the right course may not be obvious, it is often best to do nothing until skilled help arrives.

It will be seen that in some instances no first-aid measures are advised; what to refrain from doing is advice equally, if not more, important.

Nursing measures and the care of the animal in convalescence have been included, as the authors felt that such knowledge is often lacking. It should not be necessary for the busy veterinary surgeon to have to explain in detail such simple measures as dosing, handling, etc. This aspect is dealt with by a dog breeder of experience, one who is fully conversant with practical difficulties and with the best ways to overcome them.

Common conditions and mishaps have been arranged alphabetically for easy reference. It is, however, best to make yourself conversant with the action to take in any emergency rather than have to refer to the book. This is vital in some circumstances, such as choking, when immediately available knowledge may save a dog’s life, which might be lost if you have to read up what to do.
